Today, the Now We Rise collective is releasing its “Let’s Talk Turkey” Holiday Conversation Guide, a tool for Americans to broach the taboo issues of politics, prejudice, and Donald Trump at the family dinner table this holiday season. Now We Rise — a diverse group of young people — is challenging American families to discuss the election, arguing that conversations about Trump’s hate-filled campaign are essential to repairing our politics and our families.
“Let’s Talk Turkey” provides guidelines for conducting loving, compassionate dialogue with family members and friends who supported Trump’s divisive campaign. The guide offers talking points, conversation starters, social media graphics, and a list of actions every family can take to resist normalizing bigotry.
“While many in the press appear to be struggling with the semantics of bigotry, real people in the U.S. are living in a state of emergency,” said Ghazal Rahmanpanah, a co-founder of Now We Rise. “Now more than ever, we can’t afford to turn away from addressing prejudice and hate.”
More than half of the U.S. population cited the 2016 election as a significant stressor — before we knew who the President would be. Since election night (November 8), more than 700 hate crimes have been reported, while suicide prevention and crisis hotlines are experiencing a surge in volume. Meanwhile, the President-elect’s Cabinet appointments and policy proposals have dredged up the worst vestiges of American history. People of color, LGBTQ persons, religious minorities, and other communities fear for their safety. “Let’s Talk Turkey” is designed to help mitigate these threats.
“We must all resist the urge to normalize violence and white supremacy in the United States,” said Now We Rise organizer Devon Blount. “Talking to one another is how we start.”
The Now We Rise collective is a diverse coalition of Millennials working to repair America’s fractured politics by providing a platform and resources for young people seeking to counter bigotry and hate.
